2017 Youth Drug Survey

The mission of the Center for Prevention Services (CPS) is to employ evidence-based programs to support efforts to prevent substance use and abuse among youth and families in Mecklenburg and surrounding counties. Every two years, CPS administers the Youth Drug Survey to Mecklenburg County students in 6th, 8th, 10th, and 12th grades in order to gain up-to-date insight into the behavior and beliefs of our youth. The survey assesses use of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana and prescription drugs over the past 30 days, as well as youth perception of risk associated with these substances, perceptions regarding peer and parental beliefs surrounding substance use, and intentions for future use. A version of the YDS has been administered in CMS schools for over 30 years, providing us with longitudinal data regarding substance use and abuse among county youth. Data collected from the YDS will be employed to support prevention efforts for youth and families of Mecklenburg county.
