About Substance Abuse Prevention Services
Through the eyes of a visionary pediatrician, Jonnie McLeod, the challenge of preventing drug abuse was presented in 1971. With support from the Junior League of Charlotte, Substance Abuse Prevention Services was established as the Charlotte Drug Education Center. Our organization has defined prevention for the nation through community intervention and science-based educational programs. The Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) definition is "a process that empowers individuals to meet the challenges of life by creating and reinforcing healthy behavior and lifestyles and by reducing the risks that contribute to alcohol, tobacco and other drug misuse and abuse." Prevention Services has trained personnel to deliver prevention programs in 21 states.
