Program Support: Learn to Lead curriculum

Become a part of bringing Learn to Lead (L2L) curriculum to classrooms across the country by helping us pilot L2L and register it on National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP).

What is Learn to Lead?
Learn to Lead focuses on establishing leadership among youth by developing youth’s skills in the area of self-understanding, leadership, and substance use prevention.

L2L was originally developed and published in 1975 by the Center for Prevention Services (then the Drug Education Center) and under its previous title, Ombudsman, was one of the earliest substance abuse prevention curricula. Ombudsman was the only drug abuse prevention program for grades 5-9 approved for inclusion in the U.S. Department of Education’s National Diffusion Network in the late 1970s through the 1980s.

Through grant support for technical assistance and program evaluation under the Service to Science initiative of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) Center for Applied Prevention Technologies (CAPT), the curriculum was revitalized and reevaluated in 2013-2014.

In 2016, we partnered with Apparo and Cap Tech to design first ever prevention app. Lead the Way app helps strengthen communication and decision-making skills and can be used in conjunction with L2L. Lead the Way is free and can be downloaded through Apple app store.

Why does L2L need to be piloted?
In order to submit Learn to Lead to NREPP, we need to provide evidence of its effectiveness.  Piloting involves a controlled, randomized study conducted by an outside evaluator, with results published in a peer-reviewed journal.

What does NREPP registration mean?
NREPP registration means that we can offer L2L as an evidence-based intervention through our grants at no cost to the local communities we serve.  We can also offer Training of Trainers to other communities to spread the impact of L2L across the country.
